Johns Island, SC — Community advocate, nonprofit leader, and political advisor Radia Baxter today announced her candidacy for the South Carolina House of Representatives District 116 seat. Baxter officially filed her candidacy at Noon on March 16.

A longtime community leader in the Charleston region, Baxter currently serves as Chairwoman of the YWCA of Greater Charleston and has spent decades supporting community initiatives, advising political leaders, and advocating for programs that expand opportunity for families across the Lowcountry.

Baxter's campaign will focus on strengthening communities, expanding economic opportunity, and ensuring that residents across District 116 have access to the resources needed to thrive.

"For years, I've worked behind the scenes organizing, supporting leaders, and helping our community move forward. My work has always been rooted in service. Now I feel called to step forward and serve in a new way."

A proud mother of three and cancer survivor, she graduated from the College of Charleston in 2023 at the age of 44 and is currently completing an Executive MBA at the institution this spring.

Throughout her career, Baxter has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations in the Lowcountry and works professionally as a consultant to businesses throughout the Southeast, focusing on responsible community development, affordable housing initiatives, and social reform efforts.

"I have spent most of my adult life attending community meetings, mentoring others, and listening to the needs of our neighborhoods. Now I am ready to bring that same commitment to the State House."
